Quite correct muzzle safety and awareness is a must, i.e. muzzle down.
I have never had so many muzzles flash past my face and in the direction of my body than when in Italy this year, it was ridiculous.

Seen quite a few 8yrd targets shot with 30-40ft/lb, .22 bis mags and no ricohets back to firing line, granted it's not a target whilst marking I stare directly at but as Rob says put them straight out in front and not angled.
