Default FT or not FT, that is the question....

When we first started shooting, the people we first met, and their attitude to shooting has a major effect on our chosen discipline.....in our case we became confirmed HFT ers. As we shot more we became aware of a 'gulf' between HFT and FT with most of our HFT friends never having shot FT, yet being ABSOLUTELY certain that they didn't like it...." it's a bit elitist ",..."what, all that twiddling? No, not for me.." were common responses. As a result it was a while before we first had a go at FT and let me tell you all that is nonsense.

We both shoot using hold-over ( NO TWIDDLIN' ), me with a springer and x16 mag...range finding might be easier with a big 50x but it's easy enough with just 16x believe me, and now we attend every local FT shoot we can. Remember it's ALL SHOOTING...and whether you sit or lay down it's just a target that goes down ( if you hit the F.....! ) and our main regret is that we did not shoot FT earlier 55yrds is only +10 for an HFT shooter, and there is rarely more than four of these on a course, other than that it's mainly big 40mils that a good HFT er will just eat up, and it really helps to learn the wind shooting FT during the winter. Unless you're in the top five nobody cares about your score ( other than you) so please, to anyone that has only ever shot HFT, have a go at FT and don't rob yourself of some great shooting opportunity's ! NOTE do not bother handycapping yourself with SFT, just go FT and see what you can do, you might surprise yourself! My PB with x16 set up, 21...not bad eh?...and I can't shoot for S..t !

For me its all about shooting. My preference is FT but I have done a few HFT events over the years. As an 'old school' FT'er I can remember shooting using hold over and under in the early 90's before 'twiddling' became the norm.

Even now I still revert back to hold under/over with by FT rig just to have a change from twiddling. Makes you concentrate that little bit more and as they say a change is as good as a rest. Some think its elitist but to be honest its just a good group of people enjoying what style they like.

I would like to do both but haven't got the time to do all the hft shoots I want , there's always a bit of banter between the disciplines even springers within hft so its all ( or should be all good fun ).

My very first shoot was at an FT comp at Tawd, i came top in the SFT class using my first regged Ultra, it was round 3 in a 4 from 6 series so i did the remaining 3 rounds and won the class. To be fair it was not hotly contested, I made a lot of friends many of which are still shooting the HFT comps and won my first series, all good fun! I would do more but HFT takes up all my time!

Tench mate, it's quite apparent to us all that you are indeed a very busy man when it comes to HFT!!!

Absolutely, the current SFT champ' MR Simon Battye is our regular shooting partner, however they dropped the class at the FT classic this year and as a result he is now a full blown twiddler!!!

In Scotland we have managed to arrange our HFT and FT shoots so that there are no clashes, and it is possible for a shooter to do both and fill every weekend in the year! I have done a few FT shoots as both HFT style (we have a class for HFT shooters to shoot 'FT off the floor' HFT style) and FT, and I do think to do FT sitting you need a dedicated action&stock setup.

I actually really enjoy SFT....had some excellent shoots in the past and was thinking of doing it this year in the Winter league. It depends on how many in the NEFTA region will be having a go though.

I love FT and HFT but to be good at one you need to focus your time and effort on a single discipline. I still have my FT rig but find that i loose some FT skills (sitting stability for one) if i concentrate on HFT and if i shoot FT i start to get sloppy with my HFT skils.....never mind breaking out the boinger

I've tried both but still prefer SFT, I don't like shooting against the clock (although I have in the past and been fine - I tend to panic) - shooting SFT is more relaxing for me, you have more time to think about the target and mainly being an HFT'er hold over comes more naturally than twiddling and since Chris sorted my gun ( big thank you!), I've done well in both HFT and FT Open's.

I have shot springer FT but found using clicks just did not work for me so reverted back to range finding and shooting hold over on 10 mag which was fine. It's what Clive does and it works for him

Any shooting is good fun, just go out and have a go!

Heather
