I have to agree with the above! An s400 or hw101 with a panorama is the best combo (new) for that kind of budget! Handle both & decide which one you like the "feel" of best. They're both capable of putting in a good score on a hft course but they have to fit you! The low(ish) cheek piece on the hw might not fit your face for instance + balance in the shoulder is also important for positional shots.
Rick Ardern. RIP mate, never ever forgotten!

Currently in stock........

Steyr LG100 x2, Ripley AR5S x3, hw77 x2, hw80 x2, hw100, hw97, hw98, Walther Dommie, Walther LGV, Stoeger x20s .22, Daystate mk4 in a custom laminate stock, Diana mod 50 + Gamo compact & Röhm twinmaster pistols

I would go 400 as well, or even better a second hand MPR 400 which has a slightly better barrel for withstanding zero shifts from light knocks.
The 400 or 500 series are probably the most reliable gun out there for hunting or HFT. I have had most of the other guns available including a HW100.

I agree with the other posts about buying elsewhere, but I would go second hand, preferably from someone on here or a club. You will probably pick one up with a suitable adjustable custom stock on as well which will be a bonus for HFT.

Panorama is a good choice for the money but make sure you get the 40mm front (not 50mm, as its easier to mount) preferably with adjustable objective.

I'd advise shopping around for a good second hand setup. And if you get an AA 400 you can also upgrade to a fully adjustable ACZ Ultra stock in due course, in order to get as perfect fit / balance as possible once your basic skills have been honed and your enthusiasm has really built up! HFT is addictive!

Go along to your local air rifle club there's always a rifle for sale or a member will put you on to someone selling you wont get caught with buying rubbish that's what we in our club advise.

There are not many bargains at game fairs.

I have only ever seen 2.

1 Escort Magnum SA. Still got it and enjoy fixing it every time it throws one.

2 some slight seconds (pencil marks on fabric) Barbour Quilted Jackets.

After that, I've got no good news i'm afraid.
