Default Pentathlon

Here are the results from the 2012 Shebbear Pentathlon, held today in sunny conditions with a steady breeze from the east.

There were five compulsory events; a speedshoot comprising a set of silhouettes all at 25 yards taken seated, and with 1 for the rams, 3 for the pigs, 5 for the turkeys and 7 for the chickens. Score the best you can, in two and a half minutes, any single shot rifle. Top in this event was Damian Hewings of Dartmoor with 79 out of a possible 80.

Next discipline was the running rat, five shots at the rat as it scampers from one secure end of the track to the other. Joint top score with four hits, Alec Gibbs and Pete Montanez. All I can say is, a huge amount of laughter emanated from this part of the ground.

Third event was Pointless FT, where you score 1 for a hit and 5 for a miss, with some secret bonus targets worth minus five each, to redeem your misses. Top score Trevor Bray with sixteen hits out of twenty. Second John Anderson and third Bill Hartnoll.

Next came the Humane HFT, scored with 2 for a kill and minus 2 for a faceplate and a zero for a complete miss. No rewards for wounding shots! Damian Hewings first with 38 ex possible 42, followed by Adam Hulcoop on 30 and Pete Montanez and Nigel Palmer joint third on 26.

Outdoor LSR was not easy in the breeze which was broadside to the shooters. John Anderson and I tied for top score 42 ex 50 and John got it on a tie break, Alec Gibbs 39 was third.

In all the events, the winner gained 100 points, second had 99 points and so on, and this meant every event was as important as the others.

Overall Winner for the day was Alec Gibbs with 484 ex 500, second was Damian Hewings with 478 and third was Pete Montanez on 476.

The long range egg on a pole side shoot proved too difficult in the breezy conditions as nobody had any aim points for 86 yards - darn, now I've told you how far it was! - and it was taking about two feet of holdover to get anywhere near close.

I'll leave it to others to comment, but we could have easily accommodated a bigger turnout and those who came enjoyed their day.

Yes, thanks to Rich and his club members for putting on an excellent days shooting. The weather was fantastic, the wind was almost readable and to those who couldn't make it.....
It was their loss and certaintly not mine!!
