Exclamation Transferwise and shooting

Transferwise and shooting

Recently I have been using Transferwise to move pay foreign suppliers for parts. However I have had a few transactions cancelled.

Investigating one they said there was a problem with the recipient's bank account saying it was not a proper bank account, but that turned out not to be the case.

Investigating another it was suggested I was a business, and that was the reason it was cancelled. I then confirmed I was not using it for business purposes.
Investigating another no reason was given and I was told no reason would be given. I was told they accepted I was not using it for business purposes but they stated the transaction would still not go through due to their policy.
I have since cancelled the account.

The only common link between these transactions is they involve shooting and when I asked if there was an anti-shooting policy they stated they would not confirm or deny that is the case.

Your experiences may vary but this will not be a service I now recommend.

I recommend HiFX, never had any problem using them.

No, I haven't. It's just they charge £9 per transaction and their rate isn't as good. Looking at another service and have made enquiries as to if it's going to be an issue with them.

I spoke to a company called Azimo.com yesterday. They're listed on Moneysavingexpert.com http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/ban...rency-exchange

I explained to them that despite my email containing the words shooting, I wasn't an arms dealer, buying weapons from abroad, merely a hobbying shooter shooting an internationally recognised discipline, and that I'd be buying parts and pellets occaisionally from a couple of places, now and then, up to the value of a £1000. They said as long as that was the case, they won't have a problem.

In comparison to a HiFX transfer which was £275 for 300 euros, Azimo were £265 (doing it via bank transfer, not Swift). The bank was closer to £290.

Read up on MSE about the company. I'm not giving financial advice here, just stating that it appears Transferwise has a problem with shooting and Azimo don't and that they are cheaper than doing it via a bank, but you need to read up on it to understand the pros and cons.

Oh and if you search on the internet you get a code for azimo which gives you £10 off your first transfer.

Considering our banks charge £25 per transaction and the Post Office charge £21 or so I found HiFX did my job when I needed to spend a reasonable amount. With the current price of the €uro and getting a lower priced item then I suppose the £8/£9 fee needs to be factored into the equation.

The exchange rate Azimo uses is also better than the banks and Hifix. Azimo at the moment is 1.165, HiFx 1.155
Small difference but in the right direction. TW is 1.178.

To send 100 euros (without costs)

TW £84.84
Az £85.73
Hifx £86.80

But remember Hifx carries a £9 charge on top.

Hifx haven't complained so far, transfering to both outlets that Transferwise cancelled. I'll see how Azimo goes.

So Transferwise don't support the shooting sports community. Let's make this public as they have officially stated it now!
