Default Gloss finish for a stock

The Paul Wilson stock that I got for my Daystate is going to need to be refinished. It currently has a high gloss varnish/ lacquer finish which has worn in places. I want to repeat a similar finish. So, do I give it a quick flat back to key the surface and then use a spray polyurethane varnish, or a spray lacquer? Which is likely to give the best finish?

I don't want to strip and oil it.
