Well, in most variants of HFT you either can't touch the scope once you've started the course, or your options are very tightly limited. So you need a scope that will allow you to get all of the targets acceptably in focus, and that usually means no more than 10x mag and a front objective no bigger than 40 to 45mm.

Higher mag scopes and larger objectives are ideal for differential focussing as you would employ in FT to help to determine the target range. That is disallowed in HFT.
