if your reg is leaking, the pressure in the valve chamber will be more than the normal value, sometimes near the pressure of the cylinder. The hammer isn't able to open the valve far and long enough due to this over pressure, resulting in a big velocity drop. You may notice a lower poi.
This can be easily measured with a crony.
So if you suspect your regulator to be faulty, this is a possible scenario and way to diagnose.
