We'd class the base of the tree where it thickens and before it goes below the ground as a support. The roots themselves are tricky as they could come back to the surface with less than a cm above "ground level", I'd suggest nobody use one of these as it would be difficult to say whether or not you have the forend on the "ground" or not. If you are attempting to use a support very close to the ground it's always worth pointing out to your shooting partners what you are doing and that your rifle isn't grounded.
