The way they do it, they can machine the cut out at the same time the stock is produced, all as one activity. What would have been the cheekpiece is now sawdust.

The horrible black thing is mass produced and all of them will be identical.

Cutting out the cheekpiece with a bandsaw and using the same piece is a much more lengthy job and would best be done by an operator rather than a machine. All stocks vary in terms of grain and figuring, and choosing the best cut line is a matter of judgement each time. Thus, no interchangeability. Make a mistake and you bin the stock.
