I never understand people that dismiss bracketing as an accurate ranging method, like anything it's as accurate as you want it to be except that you don't have temperature or light considerations.

Tank gunners have used the bracketing method of ranging since WW2 and even today with laser ranging they still have a reticle to allow bracketing in case all the electronics go West.
Snipers/artillery have a nasty habit of disabling tank targeting systems, so to have a fool-proof manual back up is essential.
I agree, Si Higgins said to me when I started that it was a good idea to know this info just in case you ran out of time, saved me on a kneeler at Newbury once.
