Yes, crud will migrate into the hammer channel. I've seen this happen before. It is best to run it dry. Do not lube the hammer or bolt. Otherwise it will attract dirt and trash that will eventually get into the hammer channel and cause velocity fluctuations. Just clean it all well, polish the hammer and spring. Then you'll be ready to go.
