I've used varifocals with photocromatic lenses for a good few years now in HFT and FT competitions and as far as I can make out the range finding in both disciplins isn't a problem;the main problem being windage allowances and the way the wind doesn't play ball!.
One other thing, the lenses are modified so that as the power goes from long distance (at top)to close (at bottom) the lens has been modded to stretch the mid range with regard to the bottom.
It works for me,but there is an optician who is very good does most of the shooters at Bisley, apparantly the bees knees.Check out the Lord Roberts venue.
