I used a comp. 40 for some years and always ranged by zipping the wheel round and focussing instantly on the target, that is the range.
Any attempt at trying to fine-tune the focussing would lead to errors as your eye adjusts to the image so fooling your brain that it is sharp when it isn't.
Best way to check is to quickly focus, then look away for a second and then when you look back you'll easily see if it's correctly focussed or not.
