I was told that AA buy dies that are exclusively used for their own pellets. A batch of lead is then designated for that die. A small run is made with the die/lead combo. This small run is then checked for weight consistency and accuracy. If it does not pass the test they can then try a different bit that pushes in from the back to form the pellet. Once their happy they then do a production run until that batch of lead is all used. The dies are rotated and, a year later for example, when that die is put back into production the different batch of lead used may mean a different push in bit is used and so different depth skirts can be found from the same die. I was told this on a factory tour of Air Arms.
