I'm reminded of this story:

An Austrian scientist was doing a series of grasshopper studies, several of the grasshoppers (his favourites he called them) could perform certain tasks on command.

One in particular would jump and turn on command, the scientist would spend many hours perfecting this skill of communication with this grasshopper.

He was pondering on how this communication worked.

Accidentally one day, his favourite grasshopper had a fight with another grasshopper and lost its legs.

The scientists was distraught, picked up "his" grasshopper and placed it on the table next to him, on the command "jump" nothing happened, the scientists pondered this for a while.....then concluded in his journal......" Unfortunately if a grasshopper loses its legs, it goes deaf"
