Consider this, gravity is constant. It has a however a gradually reducing effect on the TRAJECTORY of the pellet as the angle changes from horizontal to vertical. If it were possible to fire vertically and ignoring wind speed, earths rotation etc. the pellet should, in theory, rise straight up and come straight back down. So for small angles (up or down) ignore and for steeper ones aim lower.
