Seen many used but not sure why.
Depends what you shoot really. In FT they can be used to provide comfort for the knee the rifle rests on(in my case) while in the sitting position. Also for the kneelers they protect the knee resting on the ground - same for Hft protect the grounded knee.
Height is more usually covered by an adjustable hamster for most people.
Some just use a shooting glove folded over knee instead of knee pad or padded hamster - gives comfort when shooting FT style.
I dare say some regard it as essential to their whole seated set up for ft - as just makes it "feel right"!
