Hi Dusty,
Yep your right about the older Reg's, very nasty experience you had there, I always stand to the side when filling mine although the reg has the steel threaded end, the steel air cylinder has the brass fitting. The aluminium cylinder I have is fitted with a steel valve fitting.

When using anything to do with HPA safety is always paramount!
