This of course is what makes the H5A so intrinsically safe. Take away the magazine and the rifle cannot be fired, empty or not. It is also impossible to load a pellet into the breech, you can't get at it, and even if you could, with no magazine in place no air is released when you pull the trigger. It just goes click, and then you have to cock it manually again.
You can remove the magazine at any time, even with pellets on board and as yet not shot. So there is no need ever to leave it in an unsafe condition. There is never "one up the spout". Despite that there is a safety catch that interlocks with the trigger.
The magazine is spring driven from one chamber to the next; it's only the trip mechanism allowing the magazine to move one location that is powered by air.
