On a slightly more serious tack, the fact that the pellets of today drop through the size guide whereas older patterns don't, or didn't, gives some credence to my earlier comment about different makers. Years ago we saw Crosmans as a front runner, also H&N FTT, both seem to be harder lead than today's offerings, and certainly in many of my rifles need a more determined push to get them into the breech.

Much as the top guys might waste a shot if they felt the pellet loaded badly, I often found in my EV2 that if you could feel the pellet when you closed the bolt, it would be a flyer.
