With a Rowan band fitted and the barrel floated, I could squeeze the cylinder and barrel together far too easily for my liking.

Was the cylinder screwed in all the way? When I ditched the band altogether in the GinB stock the cylinder was (almost) unsupported by the woodwork. Certainly if the cylinder was screwed in with the stock off (e.g. for reg setting) it was rigidly supported by the action thread alone.
Indeed quite a few people have converted their HW100s to use buddy bottles with no ill effects.
