The Winter league course at Far Coley last year was to me a fair example, very little wind to speak of, but still a bit tricky when that subtle drift comes from behind and switches. It was a balanced course with something for everyone. Top score on the day I think was The Fish only missing 1, which was a 42 yarder off the bag. So they don't have to be long to be difficult. Some angled reducers and the odd 15mm sometimes does the business. Then a 40-45yd discipline would usually separate the top shots.
