We chose to use the 1 hit system so as to distinguish between "penalties" and "no-shows". If the person got a zero, some time later it might be hard to recall if they just weren't there, or tore their card up.
It makes sense and like Doz said if you want to just shoot without entering in the full comp and grading of the shoot you state it at the beginning, this way you can keep your card and do what ever takes your fancy with it.
