Few wear them correctly (as in 10m and 3P ) anyway but I think the biggest abuse is tucking the butt of the rifle inside any type of jacket so that it is given considerable additional support. Some even rest the stock on their chests :-)
Some knee-pads on the non-kneeling knee can be dubious especially the builders' type which extends out beyond the knee and acts as a shelf to rest the forearm on - they are solid and hardly "padding".

I haven't used my jacket so much over the winter season, preferring to stay warm (they aren't warm those canvas+leather things) and the only thing that would help my appalling standers would be not to have had a large piece of my insides unzipped and stitched up again.
