try Powerpoint instead of Excel. The line shapes in Powepoint can be set to specific length in the "properties" of the shape you made. (right click on the shape and then choose "size and position").

I used a different line length with a diamond end for each distance (10,12,14,16,20,22,28,34 etc to 55). Set these each to the different lengths from my 8 yard starting point (measured from the masking tape). Then moved the lines to overlay each other. This way you see one line with a diamond for every yard/meter increment.
Set to print at 100%. Worked well.
