But, and this is a big but... unless you have flash units that will go seriously fast you will catch naff all... I've got a pair of Vivitars which can be shorted to go up to 1/32000th, so you can shoot in a dark room and use their light as the effective shutter, but i don't think they are near fast enough.

Note though Kev had his daystate wound down to 75fps to fire the shot. If we're talking 12 ft-lb you need a faster flash, something in the region of 1/500,000th and then you're talking serious money. From memory before the £$ went bad it was a few k for a flash capable of such short duration.
