I think this all is totally mental. You knew that you were shooting with average pellets and maybe you shot more carefully to compensate this 'disadvantage'. Others are more confident and easy with their specially treated pellets and shoot better with them.
Oh and don't forget to mention that sometimes the worse pellet is better: if you twitch the rifle to the right and the pellet flies off to the left then these two mistakes can add themselves as a hit, while shooting perfectly with a bad pellet or shooting badly with a perfect pellet is a guaranteed miss
So what you're saying is don't use "magic" pellets, just take more care.
