I tend to range standing up these days. I found that sitting down or kneeling first, then getting up into standing position, got my heart rate up just when I need it to settle (yes I'm unfit!). Whether or not you can do it standing depends how big is your sidewheel, how deep is your hamster... and how long are your fingers or thumb!
