When the aperture in any lens system is reduced it increases the depth of field.
Your eye is a lens system and the aperture (iris) closes down as the light intensity increases (it gets sunny) thus increasing the depth of field ( focusing both closer and further)

That's why we put the small print under a bright light as our eyes get a little tired with age!!
My eyes are fine , its just that my arms are not long enough to read properly now!
My long distance is fine though!
