Do whatever you need but before start plan on paper it will save you time and you will end with a better piece.

Since its open in the back I recommend that you build one splash protection or cover the wall in the back with an acrylic sheet it will prevent from paint it when using cutting fluid.

If you want to save time buy a quick change tool post and later a Vertical Milling Slide, by the way the lathe is the cheap part the tooling is what get you broke.
