I think it is not necessary to have a long barrel (please remember how many rifles have only 40-42 cm barrels), but Steyr certainly had the reason to change to a longer one, and this is the same why Feinwerkbau manufactures the P70 FT with a 62 cm barrel: a PCP rifle with a longer barrel uses the energy of the air more efficiently, i.e. it can have more shots with the same energy and as a secondary effect, 50 shots can be more consistent if there is a smaller pressure change in the air tank.
