If you buy a second hang rifle,so the shorter version it' will have been sorted probably and if you don't like it you will recover 90-100% of your layout.
If you buy a new version you will loose money on it.
I'd see roughly what a short version should be sold for second hand,and put a wanted add on here.
If you don't get the result's your after,sell it for what you paid.

I appreciate what you are saying but I think I'm going to treat myself to a new one all the same. That said, you are right it should be spot on straight out of the box but I'm looking for any tips to keep it that way.
