When I started to read this thread, I thought I knew why I liked shooting competitions, but for me, the reasons have changed over time and with experience.
When I first started comps, it was about meeting new people on the circuit and watching / asking / learning the skills needed to improve to a decent standard.
Now, I shoot goodish scores but they're mixed with the odd nightmare. I'm pretty sure that I have delusions of winning but lack the consistancy to do it and windy days do my head in with using light pellets.
If I can get to a point where I've enjoyed the occassion, shot as well as I thought and contributed to others enjoyment of the same, I'll be a more contented shooter.
